Global Food Surplus Network

A student-led platform connecting surplus food to NGOs using verified impact credits. Transform food waste into community impact.

The Problem

Dubai generates massive surplus food while many communities face food insecurity. Current systems lack transparency and efficient distribution.

Key Challenges:
  • Post-event surplus food often goes to waste
  • NGOs struggle to source reliable, verified donations
  • No unified tracking of donation impact
  • Logistics gap between donors and recipients

Ramadan Relevance & Opportunity

Why Ramadan is Perfect Timing:

  • Surplus After Iftars: Restaurants, catering, home celebrations generate significant leftover food post-iftar.
  • Demand Rises: Communities increase support for vulnerable families during Ramadan.
  • Spiritual Alignment: Ramadan's values of compassion, moderation, and waste reduction resonate deeply with GFSN's mission.

Proposed Ramadan Campaign: "Sadaqah Through Sharing" — A month-long initiative encouraging donors to list iftar surplus, with special recognition for participants.

Food Donation Policy

Rigorous standards ensure safety, trust, and compliance.

  • Safety First: All donations must meet UAE food safety standards (ESMA-certified).
  • Transparency: Donor must provide full food provenance and handling history.
  • Freshness: Food must be at or past peak quality but still safe for consumption.
  • Recipient Choice: Recipients can refuse any donation; no obligation.
  • Cold Chain: Temperature-controlled transport required for perishables.

Packaged Food (Highest Priority):

  • Unopened packaged goods with valid expiration dates
  • Sealed dry goods, canned items, dairy products

Fresh Prepared from Approved Kitchens:

  • Commercial kitchens with food safety certifications
  • Cooked meals collected within 2 hours of preparation
  • Proper cooling & transport protocols followed

Fruits & Vegetables:

  • Fresh, unspoiled produce from verified suppliers
  • Wrapped or bagged to maintain hygiene

  • Already consumed or partially used items
  • Expired packaged goods (any sign of expiration)
  • Homemade meals (unless from certified commercial kitchens)
  • Alcohol or tobacco products
  • Medicines or supplements (safety & liability)
  • Raw or undercooked meat without certification
  • Items visibly spoiled or contaminated

  • Iftar Surplus Protocol: Special expedited verification for post-iftar donations (high volume expected).
  • Suhoor Donations: Early morning pre-fast meals collected with extended cold chain protocols.
  • Community Meals: Group meals from organizations require 3-level verification (prep, transport, recipient).
  • Special Recognition: Ramadan donors highlighted in "Sadaqah Heroes" monthly report.
